Setting Up Utilities When You Move to Huntsville or Madison: A Newcomer's Checklist

Updated October 2026

Inside Huntsville city limits, Huntsville Utilities provides electric, natural gas, and water service, so one call covers most of your setup. Outside the city, it depends on your exact address: Madison has its own water and sewer provider, parts of unincorporated Madison County get water from the Madison County Water Department, and power and trash can vary too. The fastest way to sort it out is to confirm each provider by address about two weeks before you move. Here's how.

Why Your Exact Address Matters

The Huntsville area is a patchwork. A home with a "Huntsville" mailing address isn't always inside Huntsville city limits, and city lines don't always match ZIP codes. Whether a home is in Huntsville, Madison, or unincorporated Madison County affects who provides your water, who picks up your trash, and which services you'll set up. (For a broader comparison of the two cities, see Huntsville vs. Madison, AL.)

Your agent, the seller, or the listing can usually tell you who currently serves the home. Confirm it with the provider before you schedule anything.

Electric, Natural Gas, and Water in Huntsville

Huntsville Utilities is owned by the City of Huntsville and provides electricity, natural gas, and water to residents in the city. You can start, transfer, or stop service through its website.

Not every home has natural gas, so check whether yours uses gas for heat, cooking, or water heating before you set it up.

Water in Madison and Unincorporated Madison County

  • City of Madison: Water and sewer service comes through Madison Utilities, the city's water and wastewater board.
  • Parts of unincorporated Madison County: Water may come from the Madison County Water Department, which now handles its own billing and customer service. Its website has a coverage map so you can check whether an address is in its service area.

Electric service outside Huntsville city limits can also come from a different provider depending on location, so confirm power by address, too.

Trash and Recycling

Inside Huntsville, garbage and recycling are handled by the city. Check the City of Huntsville's garbage and recycling page for your pickup day. In Madison and unincorporated areas, check with the city or county, or ask the seller who they use. Some unincorporated areas use private haulers.

Internet

Internet options vary a lot from street to street. Look up providers by exact address as soon as you're under contract, especially if you work from home, since installation appointments can book out.

When to Set Everything Up

  1. As soon as you're under contract: confirm which providers serve the address, and check internet options.
  2. About two weeks before closing or move-in: schedule service to start on your closing or move-in date. Have your closing date, the address, and ID ready. Some providers may ask for a deposit.
  3. A few days before closing: confirm every start date.
  4. On move-in day: check that power, water, and gas are on, and that the HVAC and water heater are working.

If you're buying from out of state, most of this can be handled online or by phone before you arrive. Our Buying a Home in Huntsville From Out of State guide covers the rest of the long-distance process.

Don't Forget These

  • Homestead exemption: If the home is your primary residence, file with the county after you move in.
  • Driver's license and vehicle registration: Update them after you move to Alabama.
  • Weather alerts: Turn on emergency alerts on your phone. Here's what newcomers should know about tornadoes in Huntsville.
