If you're thinking about moving to Huntsville, you probably have the same questions almost everyone asks before relocating here: What does it really cost to live here? Which part of town fits my life? And what is there to do once I arrive?

We answered all three in our latest video, filmed around Huntsville, from the Big Spring Park area downtown to Bridge Street Town Centre. Here's the written version, so you can come back to it while you plan your move.

Why So Many People Are Moving to Huntsville

Huntsville was named the #1 Best Place to Live in the U.S. for 2026 by Livability.com, topping more than 2,000 small and mid-sized cities on its annual list. It's not the first time Huntsville has been at the top, either. U.S. News & World Report ranked it #1 on its 2022–2023 Best Places to Live list.

A big part of that is the job market. Huntsville is home to Redstone Arsenal, NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, and Cummings Research Park, the second-largest research park in the country, along with a long list of aerospace, defense, engineering, and manufacturing employers. People come here from all over the country for those jobs and end up staying for the quality of life.

What Does It Cost to Live in Huntsville?

For a lot of people relocating from larger cities, this is where Huntsville really stands out. Based on cost-of-living index data as of fall 2026, Huntsville's overall cost of living runs roughly 9% below the national average. Housing is the biggest reason: it comes in well below the national average, while everyday costs like groceries are closer to what you'd pay elsewhere.

Alabama's low property taxes help too. Once you buy a primary residence here, be sure to file for the homestead exemption.

We broke the numbers down category by category in our cost-of-living video and blog, "Is Huntsville, Alabama Still Affordable in 2026?"

5 Popular Areas to Consider

Huntsville is a lot bigger than it looks on a map, and the right area for you depends on where you'll work, what kind of home you want, and how you like to spend your time. Here are five areas we walk through in the video.

Madison

Madison is its own city just west of Huntsville, with quick access to I-565, Huntsville International Airport, and the west side of Redstone Arsenal. It has a historic downtown, plenty of newer neighborhoods, and growing amenities, including Toyota Field, home of the Rocket City Trash Pandas. Homes inside Madison city limits are generally served by Madison City Schools, but always confirm zoning by exact address.

South Huntsville

South Huntsville offers established neighborhoods, lots of shopping and dining, and easy access to the mountain trails and green space on the south end of town. It's also close to the south-side gates of Redstone Arsenal, which makes it popular with people who work on the Arsenal.

Downtown Huntsville and Twickenham

If you want to walk to dinner, this is the area to look at. Downtown has restaurants, breweries, rooftop bars, live music, and events at the Von Braun Center, all around Big Spring Park. Next door, the Twickenham Historic District is known for its historic homes and tree-lined streets. Homes here tend to be one-of-a-kind, and so is the setting.

Research Park

The area around Cummings Research Park in west Huntsville puts you close to many of the city's tech and engineering employers, with Bridge Street Town Centre nearby for shopping and dining. Its central location makes it a convenient base for getting around town.

Brownsboro

East of Huntsville, Brownsboro has a more rural feel, with more land, mountain views, and less traffic. If you want room to spread out and don't mind a longer drive into town, it's worth a look.

Things to Do in Huntsville

People are often surprised by how much there is to do here:

  • U.S. Space & Rocket Center: home to Space Camp and a full-size Saturn V rocket, plus simulators and hands-on exhibits.
  • Monte Sano State Park: hiking, mountain biking, cabins, campsites, a disc golf course, and some of the best views in town.
  • Huntsville Botanical Garden: themed gardens and the Purdy Butterfly House.
  • Downtown Huntsville: restaurants, craft breweries, live music, Big Spring Park, and concerts and events at the Von Braun Center.
  • Bridge Street Town Centre: an open-air center with more than 70 shops and restaurants, plus a carousel, a splash pad, and live music on many weekends.

3 Things to Know Before You Move

These are the three tips we give everyone who's thinking about relocating here.

1. The Huntsville market can move fast. The best-priced homes often get a lot of attention quickly. Get pre-approved before you start touring so you're ready to act when the right home comes along.

2. Huntsville is bigger than it looks. The metro area covers a lot of ground, and your commute can change a lot depending on where you live. Choose your area based on where you'll work and spend your time, not just on the house.

3. The city is growing quickly. New neighborhoods, new restaurants, and new development keep coming. A local agent can help you understand what's changing near a home you're considering and make a smart long-term decision.
