Redstone Arsenal is enormous — more than 38,000 acres — and it has several different gates on different sides of the installation. That matters more than people expect when you're choosing where to live, because the "closest" neighborhood on a map isn't always the closest one to the gate you'll actually use every day.

Start With Which Gate You'll Use

Redstone Arsenal has multiple gates on different sides of the post, including Gate 9 (Rideout Road, the main gate), Gate 1 and Gate 7 (Martin Road, on the east and west sides), Gate 3 (Redstone Road), Gate 8 (Goss Road, near Drake Avenue and Patton Road), and Gate 10 (Patton Road). Gate hours and staffing can change, so always check the current gate status on Redstone Arsenal's official site rather than relying on hours you find elsewhere — but the gates' locations, and which side of the post they sit on, are a good starting point for thinking about commute. Ask your employer or check your badge paperwork for which gate you'll be directed to use most often.

If You'll Use the Madison-Side Gates

Gate 7, off Martin Road, is on the arsenal's western side near the County Line Road corridor — convenient for anyone living in Madison or the Research Park North area. This side of town has seen a lot of new construction in recent years, along with easy access to I-565 for anyone who needs to get downtown occasionally too.

If You'll Use the Main Gate or the Huntsville-Side Gates

Gate 9 (the 24/7 main gate) sits closer to central Huntsville and Research Park Boulevard, which puts neighborhoods like the University area, Blossomwood, and parts of west and central Huntsville within a shorter, more direct drive. This is also a reasonable commute for anyone who wants easy access to Cummings Research Park in the same trip, since the two areas are close to each other.

If You'll Use the South Huntsville Gates

Gates 1, 8, and 10 sit on the arsenal's eastern and southern edges, off Martin Road, Goss Road, and Patton Road. South Huntsville neighborhoods and areas around Hampton Cove and Jones Valley tend to work well for this side, particularly if you also want easier access to South Parkway or Highway 431.

If You're Willing to Trade Commute Time for More House and Land

Areas like Harvest and Meridianville sit further out but often mean more house, yard, or acreage for the money, with a longer but still very manageable drive via I-565 or Highway 53. Whether that trade-off makes sense depends on how much a shorter commute is actually worth to you day to day.

A Few Things Worth Checking Before You Commit to an Area

Traffic patterns around any of these gates can shift at shift-change times, and road construction is a near-constant in a fast-growing metro like Huntsville — so if commute time is a top priority, it's worth doing an actual test drive at the time of day you'd normally be commuting before you buy. It's also worth confirming which school system serves a specific address, since Huntsville City Schools, Madison City Schools, and Madison County Schools all serve different parts of this same general area.
