Lump Sum vs. Reimbursement

Employers generally structure relocation benefits one of two ways: a lump sum paid to you upfront to use as you see fit, or reimbursement for specific documented expenses as you incur them. A lump sum gives you flexibility, but a reimbursement structure can end up covering more if your actual moving costs run higher than expected. Moving and Transportation Costs

Depending on how your package is structured, some relocation benefits may count as taxable income to you. Some employers "gross up" relocation payments to offset the tax impact, and some don't — this is worth a specific question to your HR contact or, for anything beyond a general understanding, a conversation with a tax professional, since your own situation can vary.
