Moving to Huntsville for U.S. Space Command? Here's What to Know
Embry Group at Crue Realty | Huntsville, AL
U.S. Space Command's headquarters move to Redstone Arsenal is officially underway. If you're one of the service members, civilian employees, or contractors who will be following the command from Colorado Springs to Huntsville over the next several years, you probably have a lot of questions. When will you move? Where should you live? Should you rent first or buy?
Here's what's known so far, and how to start planning.
Where the Move Stands
Redstone Arsenal was designated as Space Command's permanent headquarters in 2025, and the relocation is happening in phases rather than all at once. Based on what Space Command and Pentagon officials have shared publicly as of September 2026:
- April 2026: Space Command's Joint Intelligence Support Element became the first operational piece of the command to move into a facility at Redstone Arsenal.
- End of 2026: Roughly 200 Space Command personnel are expected to be working at Redstone.
- End of 2028: About half of the headquarters workforce is expected to be in Alabama.
- 2027 to 2032: Groundbreaking on a permanent, purpose-built headquarters is planned for 2027, with completion targeted for 2031 and personnel move-in finishing around 2032.
In total, Military Times reports that roughly 1,400 positions are expected to relocate. The command is operating out of temporary facilities on the Arsenal while the permanent headquarters is built.
Timelines like this can change, so your command or HR office is the best source for your specific move date.
Relocation Incentives for Civilians
Space Command has said it's offering relocation incentives to civilian employees who move from Colorado Springs, including relocation bonuses paid over several years and help with moving expenses. The details depend on your position, so confirm what applies to you with your HR office before you set a budget or timeline for your home search.
Where People Are Living
Space Command's first operational facility is on the south side of the Arsenal, near Gate 10. Any valid badge works at any open Arsenal gate, so choosing where to live is really about convenience: how close you want to be to the gates you'll use most.
- South Huntsville tends to offer the shortest drive to the south-side gates and has a mix of established neighborhoods and newer homes.
- Madison sits near the west side of the Arsenal and I-565, which is handy if you'll also be working with contractors in the western corridor or Cummings Research Park.
- Hampton Cove and Jones Valley are a bit farther out but offer easy access to the south and east sides of town.
- Harvest, Athens, and Limestone County often give you more house or land for the money, with a longer drive.
Since the permanent headquarters location and your exact office could change over the next few years, it's smart to think about your commute to the Arsenal in general, not just to one building.
Coming From Colorado Springs
Many people making this move are coming from Colorado Springs, and there are a few adjustments worth knowing about:
- Property taxes in Alabama are among the lowest in the country, though sales tax is higher. Once you buy, be sure to file for Alabama's homestead exemption on your primary residence.
- The climate is a big change. Expect hot, humid summers and mild winters instead of dry air, snow, and mountain weather.
- The pace feels familiar in some ways. Like Colorado Springs, Huntsville has a strong military and aerospace community, so a lot of your neighbors and coworkers will understand the defense and space world.
Rent First or Buy Right Away?
Because this move is phased, your timing matters. If your report date is firm and you know you'll be here for years, buying soon after you arrive (or even before) can make sense, especially if you want to lock in a home before more of the command arrives. If your timeline is uncertain, renting for a few months while you learn the area can take the pressure off.
A local agent who works with military and government relocations can help you compare neighborhoods remotely, set up virtual tours, and time your purchase around your move date.
