If you're moving to North Alabama for a job at Mazda Toyota Manufacturing (MTM), you're joining one of the region's newest major employers — and one that has nothing to do with the aerospace and defense industry most relocation guides around here are written for. MTM recently reached its goal of roughly 4,000 employees at its Alabama plant, making it a genuinely large source of new residents in its own right.

Where the Plant Actually Is

MTM's plant sits at 9000 Greenbrier Parkway NW in Madison, Alabama — on the west side of the Huntsville metro, not inside Huntsville's city limits. That matters for your house search: most of the relocation content built around Redstone Arsenal or Cummings Research Park focuses on the east side of the metro. If you're commuting to MTM, your options look different.

Commute-Friendly Areas to Start Your Search

Madison itself is the closest option, with easy access to the plant via Greenbrier Parkway and I-565. Harvest and areas of unincorporated west Madison County sit a bit further out but still within a reasonable commute, and Athens and Limestone County are worth considering if you want more land or a lower price point and don't mind a longer drive. Which of these makes sense depends on your specific commute tolerance and what you're looking for in a home — a buyer's agent who knows the west side of the metro can map out realistic drive times for you before you tour anything.

A Note on Shift Work

Manufacturing employers like this one often run multiple production shifts rather than a standard 9-to-5, so it's worth asking your new employer about your actual schedule before you commit to a commute — a 20-minute drive at 6 a.m. can look very different from the same drive at 4 p.m.

Renting First vs. Buying Right Away

If you're relocating from out of state and don't know the west side of the metro yet, renting for six months to a year is a reasonable way to get oriented before you buy — especially if your shift schedule or exact assignment isn't fully settled. If you're ready to buy right away, getting pre-approved before you start touring gives you a realistic budget and makes your offer stronger once you find the right house.
