Best Small Towns Near Huntsville, AL: Meridianville, Toney, New Market & More

Embry Group at Crue Realty  |  Huntsville, AL

Not everyone relocating to North Alabama wants a subdivision. A growing number of buyers — especially those coming from out of state — are looking for acreage, a slower pace, and genuine small-town character, all while staying close enough to Huntsville for work and errands. These are the towns we send them to first.

Meridianville

About 15 minutes north of Huntsville, Meridianville is small-town living without feeling remote. With a population over 8,000, it's a mix of established families and young professionals, and new construction has picked up considerably in recent years without erasing the area's rural feel. It's a strong fit for buyers who want a bit of land but still want a quick commute to Redstone Arsenal or Research Park.

Toney

Just north of Harvest, Toney is a sprawling, unincorporated community with an estimated population near 12,700. It's popular with buyers who want genuine rural space — larger lots, mini farms, and room for animals or a garden — while staying within a manageable commute to Huntsville and the Redstone community.

New Market

Only about 15 minutes from downtown Huntsville, New Market has quietly become one of Madison County's favorite places to live. It offers the quiet, country feel buyers are looking for, paired with quick access to shopping and restaurants back toward Huntsville — the best of both worlds for buyers who don't want to sacrifice convenience for space.

Owens Cross Roads, Gurley, Hazel Green, and New Hope

Rounding out the list, these communities ringing Huntsville each offer their own version of acreage living and mini farms, with new home communities actively developing alongside more established rural properties. If space and privacy are higher on your list than walkability, one of these areas is likely to have what you're looking for.

Finding the Right Fit

The trade-off with all of these towns is the same: more space and a lower price per acre in exchange for a longer drive and, in most cases, fewer nearby amenities. For some buyers that's an easy trade. For others, it's worth weighing against a more traditional suburb. Either way, knowing what each town actually offers — schools, commute times, lot sizes, HOA presence or lack thereof — makes the decision a lot easier.
